Andy Torres, elected in 2008 to fill the remainder of Mary Foster’s council term, is seeking his first four year term. With a background in economic development he has also been a strong proponent of increasing the city’s commercial tax base. As the only Hispanic on the common council, Torres provides diversity that better reflects Peekskill’s community.

“For too long the city’s development strategy rested wholly on the residential development,” said Torres. “This council has put a strategy in place that balances residential development with commercial development. As a result we have seen national retailers like Walgreens and Holiday Inn Express take an interest in our city and we have seen small businesses like the Peekskill Brewery, the BeanRunner Café, and Trattoria Valencia set up shop. In the end this is good for existing businesses and our homeowners, as it diversifies our tax base.”
